Chapter 23

Amanda

AFTER EATING PARKER’S mouthwatering meal, we cleaned up and then took the boys into the woods to see the treehouse. Just like he’d said, it wasn’t far from Brad’s cabin.

“Whoa, cool!” Kevin shouted, running toward the treehouse, which almost looked like a floating shack from where we were standing. It was built into an enormous oak tree, and a pretty good size at that.

“Wait!” I hollered, staring at the tree fort. “It could be dangerous!”

As we drew closer, I was a little impressed with ingenuity of the builders. It looked like they’d used whatever they could get their hands on to make the thing, including pieces of siding and vinyl skirting from a mobile home.

Kevin stopped and turned to look at me, a frustrated look on his face.

“I’ll go and check it out,” Parker said, walking ahead.

After testing out the wood pieces used for the ladder, he climbed up and looked inside. After a few minutes of inspection, he gave a thumbs-up and climbed back down.

“They’ll be fine. The flooring is pretty stable,” Parker told me, as the boys disappeared into the treehouse. “Everything else is questionable.”

“Don’t lean against the walls! You could fall!” I hollered and then looked at him. “Great, I’m starting to sound like my mother, now. A perpetual worry-wart.”

“Nothing wrong with being careful,” he said with an amused look on his face.

I looked back at the tree. “Does it look like anyone has been using the thing?”

“It’s hard to say,” he replied, swatting at a mosquito. “It’s completely empty, not even any candy wrappers or other things you’d imagine a kid would forget inside. It’s probably been abandoned for quite some time. I’m surprised it’s been holding up with the kind of winters we get.”

“Me, too. You mentioned there weren’t a lot of kids around this area.”

“No. there’s not.”

“It’s kind of strange that it was built on Brad’s property. I wonder if he knew anything about it?” I said, my mind returning to the pictures we’d found. It creeped me out to think that he may have known about the treehouse and if he’d actually used it for anything.

“It’s hard to say. Was he a hiker?”

“He used to be really into fitness, so I would think that he might have walked out here. But who knows…”

“Brad seemed like a nice enough guy. He probably didn’t care,” Parker said.

If he only knew.

The door of the treehouse opened and Kevin stuck his head out. “Mom, can we sleep in here tonight?”

“Absolutely not,” I replied.

He began to protest.

“Kevin, enough,” I replied. “It’s too dangerous. Not to mention, you’d get eaten alive by mosquitos,” I said, slapping one on my arm. “In fact, we should get back to the cabin. It’s going to be getting dark soon, and the bugs are getting worse.”

“She’s right,” Parker said. “It definitely wouldn’t be a good idea to sleep in that thing.”

Looking frustrated, Kevin closed the treehouse door.

“You know, if he really wants to ‘camp’, we have a large tent back at my place.
